Ripple Wave Socks: A Design Inspired by the Rhythm of the Adriatic Sea

Some designs begin with a sketch. Others begin with a particular yarn. The Ripple Wave Socks began with a walk beside the Adriatic Sea.

Living on the Croatian coast means the sea is woven into everyday life. It isn't always dramatic. Most days it simply breathes—gentle waves rolling onto the pebbled shore, retreating, and returning again with a rhythm that has remained unchanged for centuries. It has a remarkable way of slowing busy minds and reminding you to be present.

As both a knitter and a designer, I often find inspiration in the places around me. The Adriatic has always been one of those quiet influences. I didn't want to design a sock covered in obvious waves or nautical motifs. Instead, I wanted to capture the feeling of standing beside the sea: calm, steady and peaceful.

That became the starting point for the Ripple Wave Socks.

Turning Movement into Stitches

One of my favourite parts of designing is translating something I can see into something I can knit.

The sea never repeats itself exactly, yet every wave feels connected to the one before it. I wanted the stitch pattern to echo that same gentle movement.

Rather than using colourwork, I chose texture.

Texture allows the light to play across the fabric much like sunlight dances across the water. As the stitches catch the light from different angles, subtle ripples appear across the surface of the sock. It's understated, but that's exactly what I wanted.

This isn't a loud design, even though the colour is.

It's one that quietly reveals itself, row by row.

Why a Single-Colour Pattern?

As much as I love colourwork, not every skein needs competing colours to shine.

Hand-dyed yarns often contain beautiful tonal variations that deserve to take centre stage. A textured stitch pattern adds interest without hiding those subtle shifts in colour. Even bright neon shades can add flair and personality while still allowing the design to shine.
